JALA
Digitising shrimp farming for people and mangroves
Shrimp aquaculture in Indonesia faces critical sustainability challenges. Conventional farms often degrade coastal ecosystems, including mangroves and coral reefs, while farmers struggle with unpredictable yields, inefficient practices, and limited access to financing. Shrimp farmers lack sufficient data to assess risk, optimise production, and secure funding, resulting in lower profitability and environmentally harmful practices. The long, fragmented supply chain further reduces product quality and traceability, making it difficult to implement sustainable, scalable solutions across the industry.
THE COMPANY
JALA is a female-led Indonesian technology start-up transforming shrimp aquaculture through real-time, cost-effective water-quality monitoring and data analytics. Combining IoT-enabled pond monitoring with precision farming software, JALA enables farmers to make decisions based on actual data, improving yields, reducing environmental impacts, and facilitating access to financing. JALA’s Climate Smart Shrimp (CSS) program further integrates mangrove restoration with sustainable intensification of shrimp production, creating a model for profitable, environmentally responsible aquaculture.
THE INVESTMENT
CI Ventures has invested $500,000 to support JALA’s expansion and the Climate Smart Shrimp Pilot Project. The investment includes:
- A $200,000 flexible loan to expand JALA’s commercial production of water-quality monitoring tools and digital farm management platform.
- A $300,000 loan to fund the CSS Pilot Project, covering approximately 35% of pilot costs, including mangrove restoration, infrastructure, and operational setup.
THE IMPACT
This investment is expected to:
- Improve sustainable land management practices across more than 70,000 shrimp ponds.
- Support sustainable livelihoods for over 30,000 smallholder farmers and farm employees.
- Restore 115 hectares of degraded mangrove ecosystems in Central Sulawesi and other pilot regions.
- Demonstrate the Climate Smart Shrimp financing model, potentially catalyzing $100 million in new investment for sustainable shrimp farming worldwide.
