The indri is one of the world’s largest species of lemurs — and it has a haunting call to match. It often sings in groups, and vocalizations can be heard up to 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away. Lemurs are endemic to Madagascar, a nation known for its unique wildlife: More than 300 species of reptiles and 200 mammal species — 90 percent of which are found nowhere else on Earth — live in its diverse habitats. However, nearly half the country’s forests have fallen victim to slash-and-burn agriculture and charcoal production in the last 60 years, according to recent research.
